Hess to Serve on Various Transportation Policy Committees
HARRISBURG – In his role as majority chairman of the House Transportation Committee, Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/Fulton/Huntingdon) said today he is also serving on several issue-oriented committees that aid in advising on transportation policy in the Commonwealth.

Hess, who has served on the Transportation Committee for his entire tenure as a legislator, now, by virtue of his chairmanship, serves as a voting member of the Rail Freight Advisory Committee, Aviation Advisory Committee, Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee, Pedalcycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, and most importantly, the State Transportation Commission.

“These special committees, created by the General Assembly, provide a great deal of input to molding a transportation plan for Pennsylvania, and I am pleased to work with all of them,” said Hess. “The State Transportation Commission works as a PennDOT board of directors of a sort, formulating and adopting the state 12-year transportation construction program. The other committees are dedicated to advising the governor, PennDOT and the Legislature in making improvements to our infrastructure in a sensible manner.”

Hess said the House Transportation Committee was briefed by Transportation Secretary Barry Schoch recently, who outlined the parameters of the proposal put forward by Gov. Tom Corbett. The Senate will be putting forward its own plan, and the various committees will be able to weigh in on all of them.

“These committees have a specialized focus on rail, trucking, aviation, bicycle and pedestrian activity, and the commission looks at the overall picture,” said Hess. “It is vital that they have a say in how we go forward as a Commonwealth in the critical area of transportation infrastructure, which has an impact on the entire economy.”

Hess said the first transportation hearing by the House Appropriations Committee will take place Monday, Feb. 25, at 1:45 p.m. in Room 140, Main Capitol in Harrisburg.
