Applications Now Being Accepted for Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp, Says Hess

Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/Fulton/Huntingdon) informs residents of the 78th District that applications are now being accepted for the 17th Annual Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp, scheduled for June 19-24, 2011, at the Allenberry Resort in Boiling Springs, Cumberland County.

Started in 1995 by Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commissioner Enoch S. Moore Jr. and the late Dr. Jack Beck, the camp is geared for teens between the ages of 14 and 17 and was created to educate students about the importance of coldwater conservation.

“Summer camp is a great way for our youth to experience and enjoy the outdoors while learning about nature and the importance of conserving our natural resources,” Hess said.

Classes as the camp include ecology, geology, aquatic vertebrate and invertebrate sampling, riparian buffers, hydrology, trout behavior, trout stream entomology, the biology of pollutions and the politics of conservation.  The camp also provides hands-on classes in fly tying, fly casting, streamside ethics, the evolution of an angler, water safety and survival, and streamside botany.  Students will also participate in a watershed project to repair stream habitat.  Additionally, ample time will be provided for students to fish the Yellow Breeches Creek.

The camp faculty includes professionals from various environmental fields and state agencies, such as the Fish and Boat Commission, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

Students must have been born between June 24, 1993, and June 19, 1997, to be eligible to participate.  The deadline to apply is March 31, 2011.

“I encourage those throughout the area who meet the age requirement and are interested in the outdoors to apply,” Hess said.  “Students will have an enjoyable time while gaining knowledge about caring for our environment.”
