McCONNELLSBURG – Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) presented certificates of achievement to principals of schools in the Central Fulton School District today for leading efforts to have students, teachers and staff write letters and cards to military personnel as part of a world record-setting initiative.
“This is a proud display of patriotism by our students and staff members of the district. These letters and cards go a long way in bringing a touch of home to members of the armed forces serving abroad,” Topper said. “Marking the students’ achievement today is fitting. Monday is Memorial Day, a day in which we remember all military members who died in the service of our country.”
The students, teachers and staff of McConnellsburg Elementary School and McConnellsburg Middle and High School wrote more than 200 letters and cards to members of the armed forces.
The letters and cards were submitted to the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), which collected 100,904 from across the country in just one month. The number of letters and cards collected by the DAR is a Guinness World Record for the most letters to military personnel collected in one month.
“The 100,904 letters and cards collected by the DAR was over 10 times more than what was needed to set the record,” Topper said. “I am very proud the district decided to encourage its students and staff to take part in this important project.”
A local DAR member also presented certificates of achievement to the principles. The certificates were presented to Erich May, principal of McConnellsburg Middle and High School, and Alicia Mellott, principal of McConnellsburg Elementary School.
State Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) presented certificates of achievement to staff members of Central Fulton School District to recognize students, teachers and staff who wrote more than 200 letters and cards to members of the United States military.
