BEDFORD – In response to the governor issuing a mask mandate for K-12 schools and day care facilities, Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) issued the following statement:
“The Wolf administration’s latest mask mandate is a breathtaking example of government overreach. The General Assembly and the citizens of Pennsylvania have spoken through the passage of a constitutional amendment restricting the power of the executive branch and sent the loud and clear message that decisions of this kind should be made at the local level. Over a year and a half into this pandemic, both parents and school boards are well equipped with the information required to make these important decisions.
“Throughout the summer, the 10 school districts in the 78th Legislative District spent countless hours forming custom health and safety plans that fit their students, schools and communities. The idea that all the work by elected officials will be overturned by an unelected bureaucrat at the Department of Health is unacceptable. School districts in this area should be very concerned about any department at the state level usurping their authority on this, or any other issue. It is a precedent that will not be easily overcome in the future.”
