Hours to be Extended for 2010-11 Spring Gobbler Season, Says Hess

Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/Fulton/Huntingdon) today announced that the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners gave final approval on significant changes to the 2011 spring gobbler season, which runs from April 30 to May 31, 2011.

“I am pleased the Game Commission has agreed to change the spring hunting schedule to accommodate Pennsylvanians who participate in this activity,” Hess said.  “After obtaining feedback from the public, the commissioners acted in the best interest of sportsmen and sportswomen.”

Hess noted that the major change to the spring gobbler season expands the hours for legal hunting.  Under the change, hunting hours from opening day of the season through the third Saturday (April 30, 2011, to May 14, 2011) will retain the current one-half hour before sunrise until noon timeframe.  The remainder of the season (May 16-31, 2011) will be expanded to all day hunting from one-half hour before sunrise until one-half hour after sunset.

“I have been encouraging the commission to make these changes during the past several years,” Hess said.  “Since the season is short, those legally licensed to hunt turkey should be afforded additional time for hunting.”
