Pennsylvania's Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) To Open Nov. 2, Says Hess
10/19/2009
Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/Fulton/Huntingdon) announced today that Pennsylvania’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will begin accepting applications for cash grants Nov. 2. Crisis grants will be available on Jan. 4, 2010.

Hess noted that LIHEAP helps low-income people pay their heating bills through home energy assistance grants and crisis grants. Cash grants are awarded based on household income, family size, type of heating fuel and region. Crisis grants are provided in the event of a heating emergency, including broken heating equipment or leaking lines that must be fixed or replaced, lack of fuel, termination of utility service or danger of being without fuel or of having utility service terminated. In most counties, assistance with home heating crisis situations is available 24 hours a day.

“LIHEAP is a great program for those who are unable to afford the cost of heating their homes,” Hess said. “Each year, thousands of Pennsylvanians receive assistance to help keep their families warm during the cold winter months.”

Applications will be available at the Bedford County Assistance Office at 105 North Street, Bedford, telephone 1-800-542-8584; the Fulton County Assistance Office at 539 Fulton Drive, McConnellsburg, telephone 1-800-222-8563; or the Huntingdon County Assistance Office at 7591 Lake Raystown Shopping Center, Huntingdon, telephone 1-800-237-7674. Applications are also available from local utility companies and community service agencies, such as Area Agencies on Aging or community action agencies. LIHEAP cash grant applications are available online at compass.state.pa.us.

Income eligibility for cash grants begins at $33,075 for a family of four.

“I encourage those who believe they are eligible for assistance to apply,” Hess said. “It’s best to get applications in as soon as possible before the cold weather sets in.”
