Topper Announces Safety Grants for Local Schools
11/1/2018
BEDFORD ¬– Each school district in the 78th Legislation District will receive funding through a new grant program to improve student safety, Rep. Jesse Topper (R-Bedford/Franklin/Fulton) announced.

“Created as part of the 2018-19 state budget, the School Safety Grant Program aids our school districts in improving safety for our students, educators and school personnel,” Topper said. “The funding releases are just the first part of a $60 million commitment to our school districts.”

Each local school district that applied for funding through the program was awarded an initial $25,000 grant. In Bedford County, the districts to receive grants are: Bedford Area, Chestnut Ridge, Everett Area, Northern Bedford County and Tussey Mountain. Tuscarora School District in Franklin County and Central Fulton, Forbes Road and Southern Fulton school districts in Fulton County were also awarded the grants.

Eligible uses of the funding include the hiring of school security officers, purchasing security-related technology, completing safety and security assessments, implementing violence prevention curricula, offering counseling services for students, and creating other programs to protect students.

The districts are eligible for additional funding through a competitive grant process. These grants, as well as grants for intermediate units, will be awarded at later dates, Topper said.
