Public Utility Commission to Hold Hearing in Bedford on 814 Area Code Issue, Say Metzgar and Hess
8/19/2011

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) will conduct a public hearing Tuesday, Aug. 23 in Bedford on the plan to split the 814 area code and create a new code by geographic boundary, Rep. Carl Walker Metzgar (R-Somerset/Bedford) and Rep. Dick Hess (R-Bedford/Fulton/Huntingdon) today announced.

“This is the next in a full series of public hearings to get the widest input possible on this very serious issue and I am happy that Bedford is one of the locations for this,” said Metzgar. “I encourage our residents to attend the hearing and share comments as the area code split will have a major impact on our region.”

“I encourage any interested person to sign up to testify or submit written remarks to the commission to voice your opinion on this new area code,” said Hess.  “Existing numbers will remain the same. The new area code will only apply to new phone numbers that are issued in our area, but 10-digit local dialing may be required.”

The hearing will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 in the Keystone Room of the Quality Inn, 4407 Business 220 in Bedford.

The PUC approved a plan in Dec. 2010 to split the 814 area code along geographic boundaries to avoid running out of phone numbers. The split also creates a new area code, 582, for the northwest part of the Commonwealth.

The Commission has reopened the record on the case and is reviewing more than 40 petitions for reconsideration. Alternatives to the initial plan include an overlay of a new area code and various geographic splits of the existing code running east to west, north to south or northeast to southeast.
